It takes both ambition and a solid business strategy to realise one’s full potential. Marinus Nielsen, founder of Dansk Skruefundament, has experienced this firsthand – and his business is now on track for a fivefold increase in growth.

Ideas pop up like popcorn in Marinus Nielsen’s head, and that’s one of the reasons for the company’s success.

“I have many ideas, and they are definitely a driving force for me. But it has also been a hindrance because I quickly end up juggling too many balls in the air without being able to catch them,” says Nielsen.

In 2018, he decided to fully commit to the part of his carpentry business that dealt with screw pile foundations. This led to the establishment of Dansk Skruefundament, which specialises in screw pile foundations – a greener and often faster alternative to piling or concrete pouring for new or renovated buildings.

“I chose to focus on screw pile foundations because I saw that there was a future in the concept. We have grown over the past three years and are now accelerating the business and bringing more of my ideas to life,” says Nielsen.

New strategy accelerated growth

To reach the level Dansk Skruefundament is at today, it required self-awareness and a new business plan. Almost a year ago, Marinus Nielsen decided to hire a business consultant because he couldn’t continue running the company the way he had been.

“I was running the business alone and wearing too many hats. I didn’t have time for my family or to focus on the right actions in the proper sequence that could elevate my business to a new level quickly,” says Nielsen.

A concrete plan was developed, which included hiring more employees and securing additional financing to support the execution of new initiatives and business areas to drive increased growth.

“Once the strategy was in place, the transition from thought to action was quick. I hired three employees and brought on two independent contractors, and reached out to a few banks for financing. Things moved fast from there. I met with Jeppe, who is the business banking manager at kompasbank. He made an effort to understand my business, my plans, and grasp the potential. Less than two weeks later, the loan was disbursed, and we could get started,” says Nielsen.

Expecting growth in the two- or three-digit million range

The financing from kompasbank enabled Nielsen to push forward with several of his ideas. Dansk Skruefundament has, among other things, acquired its own screw manufacturer and has initiated the development of a Danish-made machine for working with screw foundations.

“We have greatly benefited from both the financing and the advice from kompasbank. In addition to launching many good initiatives, we have received concrete guidance on developing our business. Jeppe, in particular, participated in a strategy meeting and contributed several specific suggestions that we are now in the process of implementing,” says Nielsen, adding that:

“In the coming years, we expect to achieve growth in the double-digit million range. Additionally, I am developing a new business area with insulating building elements that can replace concrete. I hold a European patent for this solution, and if successful, growth could reach a three-digit million amount within the next three years.”

The new business area will be run in collaboration with a foreign partner and will be known as FriDek. The solution can reduce construction time by up to 80% and CO2 emissions by up to 80%.
