A series of new recommendations for a national strategy for Danish fintech aim to take the sector to the next level. That was the clear message when Copenhagen Fintech, Finance Denmark, the Financial Services Union, Insurance & Pension Denmark, and the Confederation of Danish Industry gathered the industry during Nordic Fintech Week for the official launch in Copenhagen.

Over the past decade, the Danish fintech sector has grown rapidly — from just 700 employees in 2015 to almost 6,000 today. The industry holds significant potential in itself, but financial technology is also a catalyst for growth across the wider business community and for the competitiveness of Danish and Nordic companies.

Among those contributing perspectives was kompasbank’s CEO and founder, Michael Hurup Andersen, who took part in a debate with Mette Reissmann (The Social Democratic Party), Lars Gert Lose (Finance Denmark), and Thomas Brenøe (Insurance & Pension Denmark).

From niche to growth engine

Today, fintech is far more than payment apps and digital wallets. It represents the foundation of the entire financial infrastructure, from fast and affordable international payments to flexible financing, investment, and automated compliance.

At the same time, fintech has become a decisive factor for Danish SMEs. New solutions allow smaller businesses to operate globally, manage complex financing needs, and access capital on terms once reserved for larger corporations.

In other words, fintech is no longer a niche but a growth engine driving the broader economy.

kompasbank at the centre of the debate

As a digital bank dedicated to serving SMEs, kompasbank is a natural example of how fintech can create real change in the market. The official recommendation document highlights kompasbank as an example of a player already turning collaboration between banks and fintechs into practical solutions that strengthen Danish businesses and enable growth.

The new recommendations emphasize the need for:

  • Better access to risk capital

  • Closer collaboration between banks and fintechs

  • Targeted internationalization

  • The development and retention of talent

Here, kompasbank has already taken concrete steps. With solutions in international payments and currency management, we enable smaller businesses to compete globally on terms previously available only to large corporations.

Fintech as the foundation for tomorrow’s economy

As Michael Hurup Andersen, CEO and founder of kompasbank, emphasises, fintech is not just a technological trend — it is a driving force for economic development.

“Fintech is not a niche. It is one of the most transformative forces in the global economy — the infrastructure for future growth. It creates jobs, fuels innovation, and makes both businesses and societies more efficient and competitive. In Denmark, fintech already plays a vital role across industries, and at kompasbank we see it as our responsibility to turn that development into solutions that make everyday life easier and more digital for small and medium-sized businesses.”

He points out that Denmark is in a strong international position, but must act now to maintain its momentum and ensure that the ambitions of the new strategy are translated into tangible results.

Capital, partnerships, talent

The official recommendations support exactly that agenda:

  • More risk capital, enabling fintech companies to scale from startup to international reach.

  • Stronger partnerships between banks and fintechs, ensuring new technologies reach customers quickly and securely.

  • Targeted internationalization, helping Danish solutions expand globally while attracting international investment.

  • Talent development and retention, ensuring Denmark continues to attract and keep the best profiles in an increasingly competitive industry.

These initiatives are not only vital for the fintech sector itself – they are crucial to ensuring that Danish businesses more broadly gain access to better, cheaper, and more flexible financial solutions.

From strategy to action

A national strategy can set the direction. However, the collaboration between banks, fintechs, and the business community will determine whether the vision becomes reality.

At kompasbank, we see it as our role to ensure that SMEs are not overlooked but remain at the center of this development. They are the backbone of Danish business – and they, too, deserve access to the best financial solutions.

With the new strategy as a springboard, we are ready to contribute actively by developing new solutions, forming partnerships, and sharing our experience working with thousands of Danish businesses.

That is how we – together – can turn recommendations into action. And how kompasbank can help take Danish fintech to the next level.
